Rauw Alejandro

In 2017 Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi as well as Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it became the most streamed single that time, within just six months. This mix of reggaeton and pop music didn't just bring an interest to the category, but also Latin music as a whole. Billboard's Top 100 featured two songs that were Spanish most of the time, and 4 more songs in the year 2016. At the peak of Despacito's commercial success in 2017, 19 songs that were mainly written in Spanish were in at the very top of 100. It climbed to 41 in 2020. Following Justin Bieber's bilingual remix of Despacito (2017) popular artists have begun collaborating with reggaeton artists, including Drake together with Bad Bunny on MIA (2018) and Madonna along with Maluma in Medellin (2019). In the year 2020, a handful of reggaeton artists were expressing displeasure at their genre's shift towards the mainstream. But a fresh generation, namely Rauw Alejandro, aimed to keep reggaeton evolving. He often included elements from electronic dance and other genres.
